Introduction
Hogshead Publishing Ltd. has regular requirements for various types
of art, both for covers and black-and-white interior work, and we
depend entirely on freelancers to supply us with pictures and maps.
We even have occasional need for fancy logos and the like.
You should not expect an instant commission from us, even if we think
your portfolio is the hottest thing since sliced toast. Hogshead attempts
to give all its projects a cohesive feel, unifying text, art and presentation
as much as possible. This means matching artists to suitable projects,
and getting them to work closely with writers and editors while the
project is being written. As a result we’re likely to keep your
work on file until a suitable project comes along, rather than throw
a completed manuscript at you and tell you to produce twenty pages
of art for it.

Colour Work
Our colour requirements are low. Nevertheless, we are always interested
in seeing samples of colour work from artists, with a view to commissioning
covers for forthcoming works.
Colour samples should be submitted as colour photocopies, printed
copies of the work, or as digital sample on a CD. On no account should
you email graphics files to Hogshead without contacting us first and
getting our explicit prior consent, or we will delete them. We will
accept website portfolios as links only.

Future Projects
At present we are looking for an artist with a versatile style and
a strong feel for contemporary culture to work on shaping the visual
side of a new RPG line. Applicants must live in the UK, preferably
close to London, because they will have to liaise and meet with the
writer and editor of this project regularly. Be warned: we already
have a shortlist. You're going to be bloody good to get a place on
it.

Graphics
We always need good, crisp maps, plans and diagrams, and from time
to time we also need logos, icons, crests, badges and symbols. If
you can do this sort of thing to professional standard, then please
send us some samples. For this kind of graphics work, we need artists
who can not only produce crisp, clear designs, but can also imbue
it with some of the atmosphere of the background world, whatever
that may be.

Layout
If you have experience of preparing layout designs to a professional
standard (i.e. you have been trained and/or paid for it) then we
may be able to use you. All Hogshead’s books are prepared using
Pagemaker (v6.5; Mac or PC), and sent to the printer on CD. If you
are unfamiliar with this software, or do not have access to the relevant
hardware, then I’m afraid that we cannot use you. Please send
samples of previous work by post, to the address you'll find on our
homepage.

Our book covers are also created electronically. Once again, we prefer
PageMaker users, but if you use other software then we can get around
that if need be. However, you must have professional experience of
cover design and some impressive samples of previous work before we’ll
let you loose on designing a cover for us.

Submitting
Please send us a portfolio containing copies of not less than four
pieces of your work, by post. Photocopies and good-quality print-outs
are fine. If you wish to have your work returned then label it clearly
with your name and address, and include a suitable return envelope
or package. Make sure that all art submitted is suitably packaged
to survive the postal system. Hogshead Publishing accepts no responsibility
for artwork or materials sent to it.
Colour artwork may be submitted as colour photocopies, slides, transparencies or computer graphics files as follows:

|
TIFF |
CD disk (PC or Mac) |
|
EPS |
Do not email graphics files to us without getting our permission first.

Rights and Copyright
For most art, we purchase first world rights. While the product is
in print, we reserve exclusive rights to the art. Beyond that, we
reserve the right to reprint the book with the existing artwork,
but you can reprint the work elsewhere. Artists are always credited
in full, and on larger projects are given a short biography and/or
a space for a portrait. We will print studio names but not agent's
names, nor addresses or any other contact information.

Payment
We pay a fairly standard per-page rate for the artwork we commission,
compared to the rest of the games industry. For new artists it tends
to be slightly lower; but once you've proved that you're easy to
work with and understand the meaning of the word 'deadline' then
rates rise accordingly.

Payment rates for cover illustrations vary enormously, depending on the budget of the individual project, the nature of the cover and the reputation of the artist.
Thank you for your interest. We hope you have found these guidelines useful.
